Lubricants upon use in engines lose their important properties and pick up contaminants.
Spent / used lubricants are drained from engines and new lubricants are added for maintaining engine performance.
Much of the waste / used lubricating oils collected consist of used motor / engine (automotive) oil and used industrial lubricants.
Used lubricating oil (or simply used oil / waste oil) is the largest non-aqueous liquid waste in the World.

Used oil is contaminated with many toxic substances including arsenic, cadmium, chromium, benzene, toluene, chlorinated solvents and aromatic hydrocarbons such as PCBs, all of which can be toxic to plants, animals, humans and aquatic life.
Contaminants in used oil can cause cell cancer of the skin, scrotum and bladder as well as liver cancer in humans (and other mammals) due to inhalation, ingestion and skin contact of used oil.
For these reasons, used oil collection and disposal is covered by legislation in many countries. However, much of the used oil collected around the world is burned as fuel.
Many independent scientific studies have concluded that recycling of used oil is better than burning it – better for the environment, and for saving energy and valuable resources.
